SearchWP Term Synonyms
Spending a little effort to personalize the synonyms that are used on your website can go a long way toward assisting site visitors in locating the information they are seeking. There are occasions when your material could be filled with jargon that is specific to a certain business and is occasionally addressed using other phrases. At other times, the content on your website may consistently relate to one phrase, even while the visitors are looking for another. You can personalize the search experience for your visitors by using synonyms, which will increase the likelihood that your material will be located.
In order to manage synonyms on your website, you need to make sure that the Search phrase box contains the source search phrase. This is the term that users will type into your website’s search form. Next, you will need to fill in the Synonym(s) field with the suitable synonym(s) for that search term.
Whether or not the source Search Term is kept when the search is performed can be controlled by the checkbox labeled Replace. The Search Term will not be used for the search after the Replace option has been selected and activated. In the event that the checkbox is not selected, the Synonym(s) will be added to the Search Term.
The handles located next to the Replace checkbox can be used to sort the synonyms in the list. Utilizing the “Add New” option allows for the addition of new synonyms.
How Synonyms are processed
The implementation of synonym processing has been done in such a way that its primary purpose is to produce the most relevant search results. Given this, the processing is carried out in the following manner:
- Determine which synonyms to add to the search query
- Remove applicable removals
- Rebuild the search query
This approach of processing synonyms is the most generalized and least aggressive way to do so, and it generates the most complete search string as a result.
However, there is another synonym processing technique built into WordPress, and it is called searchwp_synonyms_aggressive. This method may be activated by using the hook. This aggressive method, in contrast to the processing implementation that is used by default, will apply synonym replacements as each synonym is being processed. This occurs most commonly when there is a close connection between the two sets of synonyms, such as when some synonyms include search phrases that are found in the other sets of synonyms or vice versa.
It is advised that you use the processing method that is set as the default; however, this processing procedure that is more aggressive is also accessible if you would choose to utilize it instead.
